It’s National Drinking Water Week, and there’s no better time to celebrate the clean, refreshing water we enjoy here in Waukesha! Whether you are filling up a reusable water bottle, keeping your garden green, or simply appreciating the reliable flow from your tap, this week is all about recognizing the value of safe and abundant drinking water.

🌊 The Benefits of Waukesha’s Water Source

In October 2023, the City of Waukesha made a significant transition by switching its drinking water source to 100% Lake Michigan water. This change means cleaner, softer water—approximately 60% softer than the previous groundwater supply. As a result, most Lake Michigan water users do not require water softeners, and many residents have already made the switch.

🌍 Water Conservation Incentives & Rebates

To help residents and businesses make the most of Waukesha’s new water source, the Waukesha Water Utility offers several rebates to encourage water conservation. These programs are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so it is best to act quickly!

🚿 Residential Rebates:

• Water Softener Removal Rebate:
  Removing your water softener can save money and reduce salt use, thanks to the softer Lake Michigan water. Qualifying residents who remove and dispose of their softener can apply for a rebate.

• Toilet Rebate:
  Receive up to $100 per toilet when replacing older models (1993 or earlier) with WaterSense-labeled, high-efficiency toilets. For projects involving more than five toilets, check the Large Multi-Family / Commercial Toilet Rebate guidelines.

• Shower Head Rebate:
  Swap your old shower head for a WaterSense-labeled model and receive a $25 rebate.

• Rain Barrel Rebate:
  Install a rain barrel to capture water for your garden and get up to $20 back (limit of two rebates per household).

🏢 Business & Multi-Family Rebates:

• Custom Water Efficiency Projects:
  Businesses and multi-family properties can receive up to $20,000 for approved projects that enhance water efficiency. Pre-approval is required before starting any project.

• Large Multi-Family / Commercial Toilet Rebate:
  Just like residential properties, businesses can receive up to $100 per toilet when replacing older models with high-efficiency, WaterSense-labeled toilets. Pre-approval is necessary before any changes.

💦 Waukesha’s Annual Sprinkling Ordinance

To help conserve water and maintain efficiency, Waukesha’s Annual Sprinkling Ordinance (City Ordinance 13.11) is in effect from May 1 to October 1 each year.

Watering Schedule:

• Addresses Ending with an Odd Number: Water on Tuesdays and Saturdays

• Addresses Ending with an Even Number: Water on Thursdays and Sundays

• Permitted Hours: Before 9:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m.

• Hand Watering: Allowed any day at any time.

Why These Times?
Watering early in the morning or later in the evening helps minimize evaporation, ensuring more water reaches your lawn and plants.

🌱 Sprinkling Tips for Efficiency

• Water Wisely: Established lawns only need about one inch of water per week.

• Time it Right: Set a timer as a reminder to move sprinklers.

• Morning Routine: Water before 8:00 a.m. to minimize evaporation.

• Avoid Night Watering: This helps reduce the risk of lawn diseases.

• Lawn Maintenance: Raise your mower blade to at least three inches to protect roots and retain moisture.

• Mind the Fertilizer: Overfertilizing increases water needs. Opt for slow-release, water-insoluble nitrogen for better efficiency.

• Wind Awareness: Avoid watering on windy days to prevent water waste.

• Sprinkler Positioning: Make sure sprinklers are aimed properly to avoid watering the roof, driveway, or sidewalk.

• Better Sprinkler Choice: Use sprinklers with larger holes to reduce evaporation compared to fine-mist types.

• Drip Irrigation: Use drip systems or soaker hoses for plants, trees, and gardens. Position soaker hoses upside down to minimize evaporation.
